Project title: Glacial-interglacial variations in biogenic silica and organic carbon accumulation rates in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean
Project description:
Oceanic silica cycle is tightly linked with the carbon cycle, especially along the coastal and equatorial upwelling regions and other high productivity areas, on glacial-interglacial timescales. Estimation of carbon burial in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean, in particular areas off Sumatra and Java, has been suggested to hold between 0.1% and 7.1% of the global annual carbon burial. Nonetheless, the role of biogenic silica productivity and its relation to carbon burial in this region on millennial timescale is unknown. Under this project, we will investigate biogenic silica and organic carbon in two sediment cores from the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean to understand the link between their accumulation rates and mechanisms responsible for their variations over the past 35 thousand years.
